2002-06-06: The George Washington University has placed an order for a 32 processor SGI Origin 3800 supercomputer. The computer, to be named lou, will be installed in the FHWA/NHTSA National Crash Analysis Center's computer facility at the Virginia Campus and will be made available to researchers University-wide with demanding scientific applications.

2002-07-01: The George Washington University has just taken delivery of a 32 processor SGI Origin 3800 supercomputer; it will be installed at the Virginia Campus.

2002-07-22: Installation of the eletrical circuit and UPS are complete, and the Origin 3800 has been powered up and will run SETI@home for the next few days.

2002-08-30: Software and hardware testing are complete, the Origin 3800 is now running in a production capacity.

NCAC High-Performance Computing Laboratory

The High-Performance Computing Laboratory supports the computational needs of researchers at The George Washington University Transportation Research Institute by providing high performance computing, filesystems, visualization and networking resources and technical expertise. The speciality of the HPCL is in computational structural dynamics (CSD) applications for crash simulation.

The High-Performance Computing Laboratory operates the SGI Origin 3800, HP AlphaServer GS320, HP V2200 and rx2600 technical compute servers, as well as visualization resources, including a network of SGI workstations located throughout the National Crash Analysis Center. HPCL staff also participate in the SGI EduCare support program.

The center also manages a database server for the FHWA Roadside Safety Library and a video storage system for the FHWA Crash Film Digital Library.

The center also offers some systems level support for the driving simulator lab and some suggestions on STISIM host configuration.
