Virginia Campus Network Monitoring

The Virginia Campus is using Dartware's InterMapper to monitor networked devices and services. See the maps and charts list on our InterMapper WebServer. InterMapper runs on an Xserve G5 running MacOS X Server and we use InterMapper Remote to edit maps.

Maps

Some comments on the maps, which can explain the monitoring a little more.

Domain Name Services

This map probes the dnscache+resolver and authoritative nameservers at the Virginia Campus as well as the DHCP server and WINS server. Also on the map, in italics, are the parent nameservers run by GW that are essential to resolve hostnames in our delegations.

To see more detailed information on these services, go to the DNS, DHCP or NetBIOS name service pages.

Web Services

This map probes web servers at the Virginia Campus, as well as a few running at off site locations in italics. Included are the NCAC webservers and each messaging server's WebUser interface. On the Virginia Campus servers, the probe tests HTTP availability by opening a connection to the server and issuing GET for a small text file.
Things to come:
+ run iperf to remote sites
+ get the ups's with snmp back online

+ mail servers map:
  - snmp statistics showing:
o some kind of interesting smtp bytes transferred statistics over time
       (smtpInputMessageBytesReceive, smtpOutputMessageBytesSent)
